Red Meat vs White Meat

Price of Meat Per kg

Red meat and white meat are two broad categories of meat based on the color of the meat when it is raw. Red meat typically includes meat from mammals such as beef, pork, and lamb, while white meat includes meat from poultry such as chicken and turkey. The color difference is primarily due to the amount of myoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen, present in the muscle fibers. Red meat generally has a higher myoglobin content, giving it a darker color.

In terms of nutritional composition, red meat and white meat differ in their fat content. Red meat tends to have a higher fat content, including both saturated and unsaturated fats. This can contribute to higher calorie content and potentially increase the risk of certain health conditions when consumed in excess. White meat, on the other hand, generally contains less fat, especially saturated fat, making it a leaner option.

Another difference between red meat and white meat is the iron content. Red meat is a particularly rich source of heme iron, which is more easily absorbed by the body compared to non-heme iron found in plant-based foods. This makes red meat a valuable source of iron for individuals who may be at risk of iron deficiency. White meat, while still containing iron, generally has a lower iron content compared to red meat.

When it comes to health considerations, the consumption of red meat has been associated with an increased risk of certain health conditions, particularly when consumed in large amounts. Some studies have linked high red meat consumption to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and other chronic conditions. On the other hand, white meat, especially poultry, is often considered a healthier choice due to its lower fat content and potential benefits for weight management.

It is important to note that the overall health impact of consuming red or white meat depends on the portion size, cooking methods, and the individual’s overall dietary pattern. Incorporating a variety of protein sources, including both red and white meat, as well as plant-based alternatives, can help ensure a balanced and nutritious diet.

The Price of Imported Meat vs Local Meat

The price of imported meat in Nigeria is generally higher compared to local meat. This is mainly due to the additional costs associated with importing meat, such as transportation, customs duties, and other import-related fees. Imported meat often comes from countries with higher production costs, which further contributes to its higher price. Additionally, imported meat is often considered to be of higher quality and may be preferred by certain consumers, which also affects its price. Overall, the higher price of imported meat reflects the added expenses and perceived value associated with it.

On the other hand, local meat in Nigeria is generally more affordable compared to imported meat. Local meat is sourced from domestic livestock, which eliminates the need for expensive import processes. The lower production and transportation costs associated with local meat contribute to its lower price. Additionally, local meat is often considered fresher since it doesn’t have to undergo long transportation periods. This freshness factor can also influence the price, as consumers may be willing to pay a premium for locally sourced, fresh meat.

This price range per kilo of meat currently is not correct for BENUE state. Beef here is #3,000 per kilo while goat is #3,500/kilo.

Hi Ugochukwu
It’s the average price in Nigeria not the average price in Benue State. The price of meat in Benue State is cheaper when compared to Lagos and Abuja.

It’s more expensive in Super markets. So we try to get the average price from online sales, local sales and supermarkets.
